Breastfeeding: an introduction

This module supports you to develop essential knowledge, skills, and confidence in supporting women who are considering breastfeeding or have chosen to breastfeed.

This has been designed for pharmacists working in all patient-facing sectors who wish to increase their knowledge of the use of medicines in breastfeeding and common breastfeeding associated conditions. It may also be useful for pharmacists working in other settings.

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the reasons pharmacists should support and encourage breastfeeding .
  2. Recognise the balance of risks between continuing medication when breastfeeding and interrupting the breastfeeding journey.
  3. Consider how pharmacokinetics can assist in evaluating the compatibility of medication and breastfeeding.
  4. Interpret information from specialist sources to decide the compatibility of medication with breastfeeding.
  5. Support breastfeeding mothers to continue breastfeeding in your setting of practice.
  6. Create a list of local sources of support for feeding for when mothers encounter difficulties in breastfeeding.
