Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): an introduction

This module supports you to develop essential knowledge, skills, and confidence in recognising, assessing, and supporting individuals with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

​It aims to:

  • ​Improve awareness of PMDD as a severe cyclical hormonal mood disorder which can be extremely debilitating and impair daily functioning.
  • Enhance understanding of both the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management.
  • Empower pharmacists to provide compassionate, holistic, evidence-based care.

​This has primarily been designed for pharmacists working in community pharmacy, primary care, and mental health settings, but may also be useful for pharmacists working in other settings wishing to expand their knowledge on women’s mental health.

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the clinical features and diagnostic criteria of PMDD and recognise how it impacts people in all aspects of life.
  2. ​Explain the hormonal and neurobiological mechanisms underpinning PMDD.
  3. Evaluate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options, including antidepressants, hormonal therapies, and lifestyle interventions.
  4. ​Apply a person-centred approach when counselling on PMDD management and medication adherence.
  5. ​Identify when to refer or signpost patients for specialist input or holistic support.
  6. ​Reflect on the pharmacist’s role in reducing stigma and promoting women’s mental wellbeing in professional practice.​
