Polypharmacy: Navigating CYP3A Interactions for Safer Patient Care

Polypharmacy is increasingly common across all areas of clinical practice and is associated with a higher risk of adverse drug reactions and drug interactions, with CYP3A-mediated interactions among the most clinically significant due to their impact on the metabolism of a wide range of commonly prescribed medicines.

This interactive e-learning module supports prescribing professionals to develop the knowledge and skills required to identify, assess and manage these interactions in practice, with a strong focus on practical application through case-based learning and real-world scenarios to support safe and effective prescribing.

This module is suitable for prescribing professionals working in primary and secondary care.

Estimated completion time: 3 hours

Learning objectives

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  1. Define polypharmacy and describe its impact on patient safety and medicines optimisation
  2. Explain the function and clinical relevance of the CYP3A enzyme system
  3. Recognise high-risk CYP3A-mediated drug interactions in clinical practice
  4. Assess the potential clinical consequences of these interactions
  5. Apply appropriate strategies to manage interactions safely
  6. Describe the role of emerging approaches, including pharmacogenomics and AI, in supporting prescribing decisions

Module content

This module includes:

  • Short explainer videos and expert-led podcast content
  • Interactive, case-based scenarios across a range of clinical specialties (including cardiology, oncology, respiratory medicine and infectious disease)
  • Patient perspectives to support person-centred care
  • Content exploring emerging tools such as pharmacogenomics and AI in prescribing

It can be completed as a standalone module or as part of a wider programme of learning on prescribing safety.
