Asthma in adults: an introduction

This module supports you to develop essential knowledge, skills, and confidence in managing people with asthma in practice.

This has primarily been designed for pharmacists working in community pharmacy and primary care but may also be useful for pharmacists working in other settings.

Asthma in special populations such as children and young people (less than 12 years of age), pregnancy, menopause and severe asthma and its management are not covered in detail within this module.

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  1. Analyse current epidemiological data to explain the prevalence of asthma in the UK.
  2. Describe the signs and symptoms and evaluate the impact of key risk factors of asthma.
  3. Critically appraise updated national guidelines to formulate evidence based treatment plans for asthma management.
  4. Evaluate the impact of uncontrolled asthma and inappropriate prescribing on patient and planetary health and propose sustainable strategies to mitigate these effects.
